The night before Alice Snedden, BA LLB, was admitted to the bar, she had her first stand-up comedy gig.
She never would practice law, but her studies weren’t wasted, she is now writing gags for TV3 comedy shows Jono and Ben and Funny Girls.
Snedden didn’t deliberately choose comedy over law. She’d always planned a spell in New York after university, so saving up for her travels, got a job at Auckland’s Basement Theatre. She fell in with a thespian crowd, and comedian Eli Matthewson suggested she try out SNORT (comedy improv show with Rose Matafeo and Laura Daniel also in the cast). She made a New Year’s resolution to try it, and loved it. So when she went to the US, Snedden immediately enrolled in improv classes at the USD (the Upright Citizens Brigade, Amy Poehler’s alumnus).
