Based in Auckland and individually known and respected around the country, Martha & the Backseat Drivers has been performing together since their inaugural Thirsty Dog gig at the K’rd Market Day in 2016. Their strong emphasis on harmony is a favourite with audiences as is attention to dynamics. This is music you feel.
From ballads to blues to roadhouse rhythm & blues by favourite US writers Steve Earle, Townes van Zandt and Gram Parsons. Martha Louise is well respected from many years in the NZ folk scene performing both solo and in groups at festivals in Dunedin, AKL, Chch, Wgtn and in folk clubs around the country. This group features her original songs as well as contemporary Americana, gospel, blues and acoustic versions of familiar pop music.
The variety of instruments in the group including guitars, dulcimer, dobro, Weissenborn and resonator bass adds a depth of sound and opportunities for these talented ‘Backseat Drivers’ to each feature adding unique lead breaks. They are Paul Symons, Cam Bennett and Stuart Grimshaw with Martha Louise.
