Gerhard’s was a tiny community café in the middle of the Grey Lynn shops that ran from 1991-97. News of his incredible Quark Cake travelled fast; Marti Friedlander crossed town for it, Antony and The Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers autographed his mural walls and the Jews Brothers played every Sunday for food. Gerhard grew up in his Grandmother’s kitchen in Germany, surrounded by apple trees, coming to NZ in 1982 with his parents. He travels by e-bike in his leather lederhosen and will cook for Garnet Station one Sunday a month, surprising us with his pickles and fermentation!

His first Dinner with musical interludes for $45 is:
Entree -freshly ground millet, rye, amaranth sourdough bread served with lime, rosemary pate and radish quark
Main – Baked orange ox heart cassoulet with Oma’s (grandmas) hand made German noodles, with broccolini & sauerkraut. Vegetarian option is the noodles baked with cheese and served with persimmon & pumpkin salad.
Dessert – Tarte Tartine aux poires, which is caramelised upside down pear tart.
