The Human Form: Energy & Pathos, presented by

With over 50 years of critiquing art in Auckland, TJ McNamara MNZM, shares his extensive insights into historical and contemporary art.

With the Auckland Art Gallery ‘The Body Laid Bare: Masterpieces from the Tate’’ fresh in our minds, this year the TJ McNamara Winter Lecture Series will extend and enrichen our appreciation of the use of the human form in art.

Rather than focusing on the unclothed/naked body, the Series will explore the use of the human form for the expression of human emotions: energy and pathos. The musculature often is used by artists to express energy, while the curvature is used to express pathos.

In this exploration, the Series will focus on six sculpturers: Donatello & Michelangelo, Bernini & Canova; Rodin & Henry Moore, with references to contemporary works and attitudes, international and national.

Full price is $30 each session. Cash on the day – exact change please. Enhanced with drinks & nibbles
